Lights Going Out in Monrovia

The draconian future of local journalism, as envisioned by a Star Tribune reporter:

[Sharon Schmickle] said, despite all the "gloomy analysis" about the future of print journalism, she's somewhat hopeful about new opportunities in the field, citing the online multimedia package on Liberia she worked on earlier this year.

It was so cool to be able to add the power of audio and video to that report, and I'm eager to do more of it," she said. "On the other hand, I'm not sure how much interest there will be at the Star Tribune of the future in covering Liberia.

Note how much concern is expressed for the interest level of the readership in continuing coverage of Liberia in the Star Tribune.

Taking into account what people actually want to read in their local paper seems to be a foreign concept to people accustomed to working for a monopoly provider. They may be dumping staff, but unless this mindset goes with them, reversing circulation declines is unlikely. On the bright side, at least Lileks didn't get reassigned to the Liberian beat.
