Beer of the Week (Vol. LXXXV)

Another edition of Beer of the Week brought to you by the smooth operators at Glen Lake Wine & Spirits who can help ease your journey through wide world of wine, whiskey, and beer.

This week we feature another offering from Tallgrass Brewing Company in Kansas. Tallgrass is amoung the growing numbers of craft brewers serving up their product in cans and in addition to four-packs of each selection, they also have a unique eight-pack with two each of the four styles they brew. One of those beers is their IPA:

Our third beer, Tallgrass IPA, is an India Pale Ale that is rich, complex, and flavorful. We are proud to be the first brewery here in the Great Plains to have the first brewed, cans, and draft IPA out on the market!

Tallgrass IPA originally came to life as a creation during Jeff’s early homebrewing days (batch Numero Uno), and it was consumed in short order by his friends who came over to cook out and help with the next batch. After some modifications over the years (because nobody’s rookie homebrew batch tastes all that great, but your friends will tell you it does) the recipe was dialed in to become what is now Tallgrass IPA. We love this beer and think you will too!

Style: IPA

Alcohol by Volume: 6.3%

COLOR (0-2): Golden brown and cloudy. 2

AROMA (0-2): Hoppy, but a little light. 1

HEAD (0-2): Off-white, good lacing and volume. 2

TASTE (0-5): Good combination of hops and malt with far more of the latter than you find in most IPAs. Moderately bitter and quite drinkable. Medium body with a creamy mouthfeell, it almost has a draught feel to it. 4

AFTERTASTE (0-2): Smooth finish. 2

OVERALL (0-6): Definitely not your typical heavily-hopped IPA. More malty, smoother, and thicker. Hardcore hopheads may not appreciate this less bitter version, but I found it quite enjoyable. 4

TOTAL SCORE (0-19): 15
