Driving By Flyover Land

Mark Yost seems to have been assigned an exotic journalistic enterprise: go amongst the middle-class Midwesterners and explain to the Coastal Elites their strange and fascinating ways.

Boston Brahmin accent: What are these "Snowmobiles" we have been hearing about? You mean people ride them on trips and to restaurants and bars along trails? And why pray tell would anyone want to attend a trade show on sporting goods?

Mark's job with these pieces is similar to that of a Margaret Mead living with the natives of New Guinea and trying to make sense of their seemingly bizarre culture.

His latest entry in helping residents of Fairfield county understand our customs was published in today's WSJ.

Also here were portable duck blinds, bottles of artificial scent to lure prey, and more camouflage and Day-Glo clothing than you can imagine. And, because this is a meat-eating crowd, there were numerous stands selling jerky, buffalo burgers and BBQ sauces.

Like any consumer trade show, there were a few odd items. For $140, you could buy a Ghillie Suit, the camouflage bodysuit traditionally worn by military snipers. Entirely necessary for nailing al Qaeda in Tora Bora, but probably a bit of overkill for getting your first buck in Tioga County, Pa.

Hopefully Mark's brave endeavors will help bridge some of the cultural chasm between us and our betters on the coasts.
