Subtle But Still There

I hate to keep beating a dead horse, but until Mr. Hewitt comes clean regarding his support for Mitt Romney, I feel the need to point out his continuing bias when it comes to the 2008 GOP contenders. After weeks of beating up on John McCain, I knew it was only a matter of time before Hugh turned his guns on Romney's other serious challenger, Rudy Giuliani. To his credit, his approach this time was much subtler.

After playing some clips of Giuliani's appearance on "Hannity and Colmes" last night and praising Giuliani's comments (giving the appearance of evenhandedness), Hugh brought on Terrance P. Jeffrey as a guest. Surprise, surprise. Jeffrey had a piece at NRO today questioning Giuliani's conservative cred.

Given Giuliani's well-known stands on abortion and gay marriage, it ain't exactly a rarity to find someone wondering if Giuliani is conservative enough. What's far more interesting are conservative writers who have come out in support of Giuliani, despite his views on social issues. Maybe Hugh could have had Steven Malanga or Richard Brookhiser on to discuss Giuliani. But that of course wouldn't have advanced Hugh's agenda of getting Romney nominated in 2008, whether by building up his man every chance he gets or taking shots at his opponents (or bringing on guests to do so).

The best part of Hugh's interview with Jeffrey was when Hugh asked him who he supported in 2008. Fully expecting to hear Mitt Romney, Hugh was rendered momentarily speechless when Jeffrey replied, "Tom Tancredo." After recovering his senses he then asked Jeffrey to pick between Romney, Giuliani, and McCain. You could hear the disappointment over the airwaves when Jeffery gave a non-committal, "I don't know."
