Rest In Peace

Very sad news today that Michael Kelly, who had been covering the war for the Washington Post, has been killed in an accident in Iraq . Kelly's stories from the front lines have been among the best war reporting I have ever read and just yesterday I was enthralled by his piece titled 'Across the Euphrates' detailing the 3rd Infantry Division's advance across the river and seizure of the Karbala Gap.

Kelly also wrote an amazing three part series in the Atlantic Monthly detailing the clean up efforts as the World Trade Center last year. He could have chosen to stay in the U.S. and write about the war from the safety of an office but he felt a need to be on the front lines:

He was quoted in the New York Times just four days ago as saying that he and other reporters enlisted in the Pentagon program because "there was a real sense after the last gulf war that witness had been lost. The people in the military care about that history a great deal, because it is their history."

Michael Kelly was a fine writer and a brave man. He will be greatly missed.
