The Way We Were

While researching an unrelated topic, I ran across this golden nugget of what used to pass for journalism at the Pioneer Press. From September 12, 2003, their erstwhile media reporter Brian Lambert doing his job as he saw fit, announcing a format change for a radio station in the Twin Cities:

Finally, responding to the yawning void of hyperconservative talk on local radio, California-based Salem Communications has "blown up" KYCR-AM, 1570, and replaced it with what it is describing as "The Patriot II." It's an echo, if you will, of its AM-1280 format, which it calls "The Patriot" for its wall-to-wall flag-waving, Clinton-bashing and anti-liberal screeds.

Ah yes, there it is--the bitter sarcasm, the condescension, the factually incorrect assertions. (Did he ever listen to the Patriot, even once, before describing its content?) And it was all packed in to one tiny paragraph in what was supposed to be a news item. Nobody did it like Lambert. Which may be why he is no longer employed by a reputable media outlet.

Instead, according to reports, you can hear his wit and wisdom on the local radio Air America outlet. Or should I say he's a side kick on the morning zoo for the flag-burning, Bush-bashing, anti-Republican screeding AM-930, which calls itself "Air America."

Damn, that was easy. I think I may be a natural for this whole "reporting" thing. Somebody get that paragraph to the Pulitzer committee. If that's what real journalism is, I may be the next Joanne Woodward or Leonard Bernstein.
