Genius or Goofball?

Last night, I was thinking about Hugh Hewitt's enthusiastic and, for the most part, unqualified support for President Bush's decision to nominate Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court. Hugh's position is clearly in the minority among the conservative vanguard (despite Hugh's attempts to prove otherwise by selectively linking to those who agree with him) and he risks being dismissed as nothing more than a toady, all too willing to carry water for the President no matter the circumstances. But he could also be a visionary, able to foresee the eventual outcome with a larger political and judicial perspective, while those who disagree with him are bogged down in what turns out to be meaningless minutia.

At this point in time, it's too early to tell which description more accurately applies to Hugh's views. The jury is still out and may be for some time.
