Where's The Beef?

No offense intended to our "born again" brethren, but the fact that Harriet Miers is reported to be an Evangelical Christian has NOTHING to do with whether she is qualified to be a Supreme Court justice or whether she will carry out her judicial duties in a manner pleasing to conservatives. While her religion should certainly not be held against her, it should also not be used to promote the worthiness of her nomination either. I don't recall hearing that John Roberts would make a good chief justice simply because he was Catholic. (Ed's has similar thoughts at Captain's Quarters.)

The more I hear Miers supporters try to play the Evangelical card, the more I suspect that there is not much "there" there. I was going to describe my feelings towards the Miers nomination as "cautiously pessimistic", but some damn monkey went and done stole my thunder.

When I hear the arguments now raging over Miers between conservatives, I think of a guy who wants to build a new deck on his house. He asks his friend to help him build the deck and promises his friend that once they're done, they'll have dinner on the deck: they'll feast on filet mignon and drink a couple of bottles of expensive wine. After a lot of hard work, the project is finally completed and the friend shows up for dinner, eagerly anticipating the fine food and drink that awaits. But instead of filet mignon and top shelf vino, the host serves up burgers made with 75% lean ground beef and points to a cooler where a case of cold Old Mil awaits.

Those of oppose the Miers nomination are wondering what happened to the filet mignon that they were promised while those supporting her are trying to explain why burgers are just as good.
