Mom, The Strib's Bugging Me Again
More feedback on how to avoid the Star Tribune's web site registration requirements starting with Dale:
A good resource for getting an account at places like the Strib is at: BugMeNot.com
They keep a list of login names and passwords for most of the web sites that require an account. Just enter the URL and they give you account info. The sites that require an account don't check that the information is correct. I just lie. Some sites do require at least a real email address. I don't remember how the Strib works as I created an account a long time ago when they first required one. Bug Me Not works for the Strib as well as most others.
Rich concurs:
I understand fouling the demographic database of subscribers is fun, but it still gives them an accurate count of the folks using their system and I refuse to give the Strib or NYT that pleasure. To this end, bugmenot.com maintains a list of login names and passwords that you can reuse/share for most sites that require registration. If you are in that security conscious minority of web users who use Firefox as your browser you can even automate the lookup of those combinations via an extension (see the bugmenot.com homepage to download it). I use Firefox and the bugmenot extension so when the Strib asked for my info on their login page I merely hit the right mouse button, selected BugMeNot and all the login information was filled in for me. It doesn't get much easier than that and I get the satisfaction of not adding to the Strib's eye count, which they seem plenty desperate for these days.
